Player Housing

They have said that on release there will not be any player housing. The don't ever plan on allowing "open" player towns to be created. Do you think this is a necessity to the game. Can a game like this survive with out player housing?

Absolutely. I never seen the great charm of player housing. It's only purpose is a money pit. As long as there is a way to sell/trade your goods I am happy.

RE: Player Housing

I disagree, I think player housing and player towns are essential! Recruiting for a town really helps you get to know other players, and then it allows players to create an environment they enjoy playing in.

I think if they want to control towns and housing they should just put a cap on the number of player towns that a server can have.

The option to have your own house and a player town just adds so much to a game. I can't express enough how important I think it is that they add this.

Ok, maybe I answered a bit too quickly. In several MMORPG's I have played the devs decided later on to add housing. I have been in guilds that had a "house" eventually. And it was utterly lost on me everytime. It didn't help my RP urges, nor the guild bonding. Maybe they implemented it not as good, or I just missed the point. But you seem to be quite adament about it. What is so nice about a guild house?

Well I can only speak from experience in two MMO's that I've played that have had player housing. The first was Gemstone III, the only good thing about housing here was the storage room. It was like a bigger locker lol. But it could be fun to decorate it the way you wanted.

Now in Star Wars Galaxies I've found it to be very helpful in RP. Housing itself was not that helpful, but the ability to place houses and form a player town brought it all together. First of all, there was a minimum requirement on the number of residents to reach "town" status. So you had to go out and recruit just like you would for a guild.

However the difference comes in the environment that you get to feel when you log on. When you log on in your house, which is part of a town it sets the mood. The town I lived in was written up to be sort of a small pirate town for people looking to stay away from the eye of the Empire. Every time I logged on I felt like I was in Mos Eisley "A hive of scum and villany".

That kind of put me right in the mood, then having other people feel the same way because they also lived in the town made starting RP scenrio's much easier, more free form.

As the town grows, and you get stores, and bar's added it can draw other people to the location and get them involved in what you're doing. There's really just no end to what you can do. One of my friends actually used a Guild Hall to make a Casino with live gambling!! He used Vendor's as slot machines, and had people RP being dealers at card tables. This was just the most immersive evening of my week. And if it hadn't been in a sort of pirate town, on a remote planet (Lok) it just wouldn't have been the same.

I'm not sure that really proves my point at all, but at least you might be able to understand why I feel the way that I do.

I think it proves your point quite well. I've only played in one game that had player housing (UO) and one game that had "Clan Halls" (Lineage2). In UO it was nice to have a place to call my own. I didn't live in any of the "player towns" though. It was nice though. I enjoyed having a place to take my character to before I logged out, and knowing that when I logged back in, I would be at my home.

I can see how it would help build a better RPing community though. From how you described it, Hashum, I think it would be wonderful to live in one of those towns.

Would you like a suite or a cheap sleep?
