I was still quite young by my peoples standards, at one time we had lived forever, but ever since Sundering everything had changed. Never having seen those glorious days I felt as though our new found mortality of sorts offered some understanding and insight into the other mortals of Elanthia. Mainly the humans, their short lives still only but half of our expected lives, it offered an understand as to why they so foolishly risked their lives, they had little to loose by the standards of time.
Another raiding party of Ukar had recently attacked my people just outside our home of Oakhome, in the Velzier forest. The raid had left numerous Kinnaes dead, several had managed to escape and I was sent with several others to investigate. Even one so young as myself learned quickly of the dangers even so close to our home. The Ukar were ruthless and they’re boldness and hatred for us seemed to know no bounds.
The five of us in my unit found the site of the attack with little trouble, it was no more than an hour from the city. The Ukar must have ambushed the party here, several of them lay dead but the wounds indicated the battle had started and ended in close combat. Had they the option I’m sure my family would have struck from a distance with their bows, the Ukar had defiantly initiated this combat.
The area had been well trampled during the skirmish and they had done an excellent job concealing their retreat, we did manage to find their trail leading to the south but it was hard to judge how many of them there were. Our commander Eleazer wished to pursue them, if they made it back to their camp he feared they would become bolder with their victory and it would only lead to more attacks.
We did as he wished quietly and quickly following their trail. Despite my training this would be my first taste of real combat, my stomach turned with a strange anticipation and nervousness. The Ukar already had at least an hours head start on us, but we were few and traveled light helping us catch up. We would have them before nightfall for sure…

Tracking down the wretched beasts had taken the remainder of the day, dusk was settling in when finally we hear their unceremonious steps in the forest. The Ukar were a large giant like species, any more than two of the foul beasts would be more than our company could handle, likely even if we maintained the element of surprise. Not very technologically savvy, or even that intelligent for that matter, they made up for this with brute strength and size. Not wanting to risk more casualties Eleazer sent one of the older Rangers Kuellar ahead to see how many Ukar we might be up against.
It was at least another two hours before Kuellar returned, and darkness was quickly enveloping the forest. The green hooded cloak he wore hid much of his face, but his long silvery hair seemed to flow out of the dark hood like a river. He approached Eleazer and spoke to him in whispers, even as close as we all were I could not make out much of what they said, other than that there were at least three Ukar in the party. Eleazer seemed to contemplate the options, and stood motionless as the minutes ticked by, even after Kuellar finished his report and returned to sit with the rest of us while we waited for our orders.
If there were three Ukar, it would be near suicide to attempt attacking them, even if there were six of us we would have no better than fifty, fifty, chance. Of course we were now at least half a days journey from Oakhome, and would have to camp somewhere tonight and hope the Ukar didn’t wander back in our direction if we did nothing. Either way we could very well join our brothers before the sun rises again…

Just as the last hints of sunlight were hidden by the canopy, Eleazer finally rejoined the rest of us in the darkness. Eleazer was rather taller by our standards, he’d been fighting to protect our people for as long as I could remember, he had a deep scar on his right arm running down his bicep, and the tip of his right ear was also missing. As he spoke his low but firm voice was confident “We strike tonight, we leave immediately”. There were no questions, and as he walked through the middle of our small circle and moved further into the forest I believe we all admired his resolve and courage before following him into the darkness…
It appeared that everything would have gone as Eleazer must have hoped. The Ukar had stopped for the evening forming a crude camp in the forest. The only disturbing fact was that only two Ukar sat in the camp, if there were indeed three the whereabouts of the third could mean success or failure for us. With the element of surprise the five of us could quite certainly take out the two Ukar, but if the third was in ear shot and rushed to aid them that would easily put us at a disadvantage, if the third had gone on ahead to spread word of their victory and perhaps bring more then Oakhome would need to be alerted so that our defenses could be raised.
Eleazer seemed undeterred by this fact and signaled for us to find suitable cover and an area from which to attack. The tree cover made it difficult to see and he repeated the signals twice to be sure we understood. Three of us climbed several of the nearby tree’s, not only hiding our location but giving us a birds eye view of our prey. They were foolish enough to build a fire at the center of camp which helped outline both of their large frames. Eleazer and Kuellar both appearing as mere shadow’s remained on the forest floor. As time slowly continued to creep by and as the fire in the Ukar camp slowly faded I could no longer judge where any of the other members of my unit were, the darkness had completely absorbed them. I’m not sure how much time had passed when I finally heard the signal from Eleazer.
In one fluid motion I pulled the bow from around my shoulder and had it nocked, and aimed at the closest Ukar, waiting for the next signal. The next signal came and I released my first air, the twang of the bow string was drowned out a moment later as both Ukar began to rise and bellowed in anger. In that same moment I had nocked another arrow and let loose. The big oafs came crashing after us, and the sounds of battle intensified as they swung their huge clubs, one must have nearly hit me as one of the tree’s next to mine collapsed from what I could only imagine was a direct hit from one of the Ukar.
Outside of the fire light now, the bow was quite useless, and I swung the bow back over my shoulder while grabbing a higher branch and pulling myself up further, hoping for a better vantage point. The extra height did nothing to improve my line of sight, I unsheathed the sword at my side, and dropped back down to the forest floor, following my ears now instead of my eyes. Only a few short feet away from where I was originally I could now spell the foul creatures, and began to pursue the odor, I heard a should nearby distinctively Kinnean and made off in the same direction and nearly walking into one of the creatures as I did. Realizing this and seeing the outline of the large creature take shape in front of me, I hesitated for moment and saw the club which itself was the same size as me. As he swung forward with the club I heard a snap like another tree, but that was quickly followed by a dreadful gurgle, realizing my hesitation likely cost one of my brothers his life without thinking I had lifted my sword and with both hands drove it into the back of the Ukar before me. The creature screamed and turned to face me, pulling the sword out of my hands and causing me to stumble into the creature. It swiped me with one arm and sent me flying back into the forest, crashing into a tree my body slid back down to the ground.
