Character Creation
Many players of MMO’s have become accustomed to having their characters look exactly like the developers say they can. At level X, your character will generally have item Y, and thus look like Z. But in Hero’s Journey, from day one your character is truly unique. In terms of character customization, often one barrier to roleplaying is how you look. If you want to be the dingy Samuri swordsman, who looks desheveled but uses it as a facade for his true skill. Can you do that? Yes. Simply the amount of character customizaiton seen during the preview was amazing. Also, how many MMORPGs lets you look like you want to? This in an of itself is helping to put the RPG back into MMORPG.
Hero’s Journey lets you wear whatever you want and still effectively have it protect you. For example, you may dress as a pirate, a knight in shining armor or any other of the amazing combinations they offer. The frilly pirate shirt will act just as well as the armor for protection. Obviously, this sacrifices realism, but it ensures that players get to look how they want and still effectively play the game.
They have created a very extensive character creation system. You have extremely detailed control over your face, the controls of which are derived from analysis of actual human faces. Imagine 30 or so controls just to specify your nose shape.
After that, you can spend hours (if you like) dressing your character. They have a massive inventory of options with amazingly levels of detail. For example, decide on a style of coat, specify its color, add a pattern, maybe some trim, then even choose the precise buttons you want on it. Or start piecing together a full suit of armor, with each chunk of metal being up to you. Due to the way our technology works, we will continually added new clothing elements to the possibilities on an on-going basis.
You group your clothing/armor into outfits. You can have many outfits and change between them at will. You can manage these outfits, changing them as you like. As you go, you'll find more items to add to your outfits and you can also use stuff that is generally available. Your hairstyle can also change. The thing that stays the same is your facial features and body type. So it's just like real life... you can change clothes, and dye your hair funny... but you still are you. |
